Held in conjunction with National Youth Art Month, the Institute’s thirty-sixth annual Agnes Markwalter Youth Art Competition and Exhibition seeks to promote the value of art education for all children and to encourage support for quality school art programs for all children throughout the CSRA. The 2014 competition will showcase work inspired by the theme “Make It Pop”, created by K-12 students from public, private, and home schools in Aiken, Burke, Columbia, McDuffie, and Richmond Counties. The WPA, formed in the late 1950s, has a limited membership of 150. An artist must be sponsored by an existing member. " A genuine Whiskey Painting consists of painting a miniature piece of art no larger than 4” X 5" with watercolor by dipping your brush in some form of alcoholic spirits.... then possibly sipping the alcohol, thereby enhancing the painting experience.” Learn More

TACTIC III is the third iteration of a three-part traveling exhibition which highlights the work of 24 artists. Each represent a growing shift in material sensibility in the field of contemporary ceramics. This shift is evident through the use of 3D ceramic printing, the integration of mixed media and post-firing assembly, and the use of technology typically unassociated with the making of ceramic artwork. Brett Cook is an artist and educator who uses his creative practice to transform outer and inner worlds of being. For over two decades, Cook has produced installations, exhibitions, curricula, and events widely across the United States, and internationally. As a former student of Philip Morsberger at the University of California at Berkeley, Brett was asked to create a commissioned work for the 1998 exhibit, Redefining the Pejorative: is it good or is it bad? The work, a spray-painted diptych of James Brown and William S. Morris III, was displayed on Broad Street. Cook-Dizney’s billboard-style portrait painting often touches on political and social themes and the artist himself describes it as permissional and nonpermissional.
The work will be on display in the 3rd Floor North Gallery until January 11, 2019. Please join us for a closing reception on January 11 from 6-8 PM.

The Gertrude Herbert Institute if Art is proud to present the Augusta University Department of Art and Design Senior Exhibition. Senior Exhibition is the final venture that fine art students take in order to earn their degree from Augusta University. The seniors are expected to hold an exhibition with a cohesive series displaying their ability as artists to enter and challenge the contemporary fine art field. The Gertrude Herbert will showcase a staggering fifteen seniors throughout all the galleries, while another eight seniors will display their work at the Westobou Gallery on Broad Street.

The Ties That Bind
Data analytics and media in the digital age is being used in strategic ways to efficiently target specific groups of people for personal, political or financial gain. Ideologies of “Us vs Them” are created to further divide people into groups that can be mobilized and manipulated to fight a perceived enemy. For this reason, objective truth and empathy have been replaced by sensationalism, half-truths and extremist social/political ideologies. This portfolio exchange aims to celebrate diversity and common threads that we all share. Invitations to artists will be extended with the intent of representing diversity in race, culture, geography, gender and aesthetics.
The theme, “The Ties That Bind” is open for each artist’s interpretation. 15 Artists will be invited to participate and will create an edition of 18 prints on 15” x 15” paper. Each artist is encouraged to create visual images with real or implied connecting points in the center of all four edges of their print. When displayed together, there should be an implied point of connection, whether arranged side by side or top to bottom. The prints will be displayed at a national print conference in Cleveland and will be included in the permanent collection at Kent State University. They will also be displayed nationally and in Canada at a site at each of the participant's cities. Learn More

"Welcome to Noahland" is a showcase of abstract art by a local young artist, who is also a GHIA alum. The show is about finding effort and ease. It's about creating something that is interpreted by each viewer. The show highlights that different doesn't mean less. Many of the pieces displayed were created while at GHIA summer camp, which is where Noahland was born. As Noah and the students showed off their work, one piece, the flag, was captivating and transforming. The class was ethnically diverse and the children wanted to create the flag that represented their heritage. As they proudly showed off their work, the children shared "This is China. This is Israel. This is the United States." I got to Noah's and said "This must be Noah's." And a student clamoured, "It's NOAHLAND!"
