THE ART OF PORTRAIT DRAWING FROM PHOTOGRAPHS

This course will concentrate on the techniques of rendering a head & shoulder portrait likeness. It will begin by understanding placement, proportions, & planes of the head, including the interplay of light & shadow, etc. General characteristics of faces at different ages & from various vantage points will be discussed & practiced, after which the class will concentrate on capturing the subtle differences that make each face unique. Hair, expressions, clothing, & background will also be addressed. Together, the instructor & students will draw a face step-by-step using an image from a well-known personality. Then each student will develop his/her own personal portraits. If time permits, we will also discuss & practice hand structures. Although graphite pencil will be predominately used, more experienced students are welcome to work in charcoal, conté, or other dry media. Ages 16 and up!
