ART TO GO Activity 11

Fanlights and Sidelights

The Nicholas Ware Mansion built c. 1818 is filled with architectural details including the windows.

In the photograph, notice the windows to the sides of the doors called sidelight windows and the windows above the second and third story doors are called fanlight windows because of the shape.

Before electricty was invented in the late 1800's windows were especially important to allow as much sunlight as possible throughout the entire home.

They fanlight and sidelight windows are filled with a unique pattern that we thought would be fun for you to practice filling in on the printable below.  Use the one with the designs as a guide to copy the pattern.

Then try creating your own design in the windows.
