THE BASICS OF OIL PORTRAITURE

Oil portraits have been used to capture the essence of an individual for hundreds of years. Artists have developed an array of paints, mediums, techniques and surfaces on which to present their respective portrait styles. In this class students will learn traditional styles of portraiture to help capture the likeness of the subject including:

  • Mapping out the head and face
  • Identifying the planes of the face
  • Learning tonal values & proportions
  • Choosing the right color temperature

Oil portraiture is a complex art form that takes years to master, but these basics will help students lock in a subject's facial features and develop a good base to build from when it comes to learning oil portraiture. Students will work from a model the last two sessions.

*Model fee included in tuition
