Professional Development

In order to deliver quality arts education to Georgia students, we must ensure a quality supply of professional arts educators. The Institute’s Professional Learning Unit (PLU) portfolio, which features approximately thirty courses, provides educators, including GHIA’s own faculty, the opportunity to expand their teaching skills, learn new methodology, and meet their individual professional development needs through the only local site in the CSRA accredited by the Georgia Department of Education and approved by the Georgia Council for the Arts for PLUs in the visual arts. The portfolio is an invaluable resource for teachers and has a measurable impact in the teachers’ classrooms.

At GHIA, educators can participate in courses in ceramics, fiber arts, painting, drawing, photography, and printmaking. Instruction is not grade-specific but is taught in a method that allows educators to adapt techniques to different classrooms. Interdisciplinary learning is stressed, as math, science, social studies, and the language arts are often incorporated into the lessons.

Studio classes and workshops are marked with the available number of PLU credits available for GA teachers. To coordinate, please contact the GHIA Education Director, Dorothy Eckmann, at [email protected]
