These art classes will allow you to experience art in a very hands-on way, crafting unique designs from clay, metal, or fiber. Express your imagination as you create useful and decorative items for yourself or for friends. Learn from our professional instructors as you and your classmates work together to master new skills.

WHEELWORK AND THE MAGIC OF RAKU -

Students will have the opportunity to develop their skills in the various
approaches to throwing functional ware on the wheel under the guidance of Terrie
Prouty, who specializes in this area. Instruction and projects will be tailored
to the student’s skill level. Emphasis will be placed on basic techniques. Forms
will be thrown, altered, and assembled to create various vessels. Glazing
techniques will also be addressed. Participants will also have the opportunity
to prepare bisque ware and participate in a Raku firing. Students must provide a
clean towel each week. No extra supplies will be necessary.

RIB-CONSTRUCTED BASKETRY

Experience the art of off-loom weaving as you craft two traditional Appalachian
rib-constructed baskets using natural round and flat reed materials. Students
will learn how to create shapes for a melon or hip basket and an orange basket.
Instruction will also include information on the gathering and preparation of
vines found in the CSRA that are suitable for this creative process. All
materials will be provided.

This weaving class is project-oriented and will introduce a selection of
off-loom activities that may be created with found materials and that are
appropriate for instruction in the K–12 classroom setting. Students (teachers)
will participate in hands-on activities, creating projects presented during the
course. Handouts will include instructional material for all of the projects
presented. All supplies will be provided.

STICK and M.I.G. ARC WELDING

This more advanced course is for students who want to weld steel that is
1/8-inch thick and up. At their own workstations, students will learn both MIG
and STICK Arc welding processes. Each class will include theory, demonstration,
and individual hands-on instruction. Instruction will include the use of
oxy-acetylene and plasma cutting equipment. All basic supplies, except the
required textbook Welders Handbook, by Richard Finch are included. A personal
safety equipment list will be provided upon registration.
