acrylics through a greater understanding of the medium, techniques and use of
value. The class will include instruction, demonstration, individual guidance,

WATERCOLOR: THE BASICS

No other medium matches the radiance and purity of color of watercolor. This
beginner-friendly class starts with the basics and offers an understanding of
the paint’s unique character. You will learn how to mix and layer colors and
apply the four basic watercolor techniques (flat wash, graded wash, wet-in-wet,
and dry brush) in a step-by-step approach. Demonstrations will be given on the
handling of various subjects such as trees, clouds, and water. Experienced
watercolorists may join the class to work on projects of choice with individual
guidance from the instructor. A supply list will be provided upon registration.

PLEIN AIR OIL PAINTING

If you like painting out of doors, this plein air oil class is for you. Our
accomplished instructor will enhance your experience and facilitate artistic
progress. The course begins with a demonstration and lecture covering the steps
to creating a successful painting. Lessons will address the various issues
encountered in the painting process, including drawing, composition, values, hue
and temperature, and edges. This course emphasizes individual instruction and is
tailored to problems each student encounters while painting. If several students
are having trouble with a specific concept, a lecture on that point is given. A
supply list will be provided upon registration.

OIL PAINTING FUNDAMENTALS

Students will be introduced to the basics of realistic oil painting, to
include the understanding of different materials and equipment and the various
traditional techniques of applying oil paints. Step-by-step instruction and
demonstrations will focus on form, value, light, and shadow. Color mixing and
composition will also be emphasized as students progress from preliminary
fundamental exercises to the completion of a still-life painting. A supply list
will be provided upon registration.

Students with previous experience in oils will continue to experiment with
the techniques of realistic oil painting. Value studies, color theory, paint
mixing, and various types of brush strokes will be explored. Students will have
the opportunity to complete several paintings as they work from a selection of

Have you been painting awhile now and find yourself stuck in an artistic
rut? This class is an opportunity to get out of your comfort zone and challenge
your painting skills and artistic knowledge. You’ll learn the essential elements
that go into a successful painting while working from a staged scene with live
costumed models. Emphasis will be given to the development of the figure in a
composition. You will also discover why any successful painting is the result of
the organization of a visual language—line, form, value, shape, pattern, and
texture—in an arrangement of an area. Students may work in the medium of their
choice (watercolor, acrylic, or oil). A supply list will be provided upon
registration.

MIXED MEDIA HOUSE PORTRAITS

Students will select a house or building to use as the foundation for the
creation of an exciting mixed media collage. The composition will be enhanced
through the use of atmospheric perspective to provide the illusion of depth in
the finished artwork. A partial supply list will be provided upon registration;
the remaining supplies will be provided by the Institute.
